When Provence Puts on its Autumn Dress

After the high-season turmoil of the summer, Provence rediscovers a little calm in the autumn. Losing neither its beauty nor its charm, it dresses in tones of orange and yellow, which warm up the landscape with the advent of the first misty mornings…

After a busy summer, calm returns to Provence with the arrival of the first days of autumn. A season that starts when the grape harvest ends in the very many winemaking estates of the region. This is when the vines start to take on lovely tawny colors, scarcely a few weeks after having given up their lovely grapes.

Tones of orange, yellow and brown come to dress the whole Provençal landscape, right up to the salty marshes of the Camargue region, which soon will be deserted by its famous pink flamingos, in search of more heat… Because at the end of an Indian summer, the air becomes cooler and cooler and the morning mists start to appear, giving a mystical charm to the least little road.

It’s precisely at the onset of the first cool temperatures that the Provence winter squash, a fall vegetable belonging to the Cucurbita family, and much appreciated in soups, arrives at maturity. It’s a good way to warm up while putting some orange, the color of the season, on your plate. And why not use one to decorate the house in the lead up to Halloween ?
