Research Advances on Protecting Lavender!

Threatened by leafhoppers, lavender is experimenting with new forms of combat against these small insects responsible for its decline.
By Justine Fiordelli

For many years, lavender and lavandin have been suffering from the presence of leafhoppers. Heat loving, these little insects are active for ten months of the year and attack the lavender fields in Provence by introducing into the plant a bacterium, the Stolbur Phytoplasma, responsible for the plant’s decline.

After several phases of experimentation and research with the support of L’OCCITANE, 2014 will be mainly dedicated to large-scale tests conducted by volunteer farmers. Faced with the impossibility of chemically eliminating the leafhopper, new means of indirect combat are being developed by the French fragrant plants research organization, the Crieppam, based in Manosque: spraying clay over the lavender and plant screens.

These innovative techniques are conducive to the removal of leafhoppers and thus ensure a better future for lavender. More than 12 tons of clay will be sprayed on the lavender bushes during the first year of planting to create a mechanical barrier. As for plant screens, the idea is to "plant cereals every four to five rows of lavender and lavandin to ward off the leafhopper", explains Eric Chaisse, director of the Crieppam.
