Mr. Oh Immortalizes Lavender for L’Occitane

A master of the art of combining still and moving images, past and present, this Korean artist has worked in collaboration with L’Occitane on the creation of artworks dedicated to the lavender fields of Provence.

At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking that they consist only of photographs, but after a better look, you recognize that the pieces by the Korean artist Yong-Seok Oh are in motion. This brilliant creator is the author of many videos on the theme of nature – made up of different fragments of still images (photographs) or moving images (films) – exhibited in museums around the world.

L’Occitane had the idea of collaborating with Mr. Oh so that he might immortalize through his work Provence’s most emblematic fragrant flower, lavender. Absolutely fascinating, the projections that the Asian artist created for the French company superimpose different eras, past and present.

In a first work, you discover a fragment of an image originating probably from an old black-and-white photo in which a woman farmer and a child carrying tools to harvest lavender appear. Behind them, on the right, a fragment of a video shows a large and brightly colored field of lavender in which a man and a woman are toiling.

The second video also contrasts two eras and two medium (both still and moving images), and in which it is also question of work in the lavender fields of Provence. The song of cicadas and of a bird fill your ears, nature seems to extend beyond its setting and truly come to life…
