Ballet Preljocaj and The Pavillon Noir

In Aix-en-Provence, contemporary architecture and dance merge as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Since 2006, the Ballet Preljocaj has taken up residence in a building created specially by the architect Rudy Ricciotti. Let’s take a visit.

It’s impossible not to stop before the Pavillon Noir. Located in Aix-en-Provence ’s new modern quarter, a few meters from the Grand Théâtre de Provence and just above the future Conservatory of Music and Dance designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, this intense black building appears like a 3D mashrabiya. Emphasizing its verticality, the Pavillon Noir sports a facade that allow one to see the activity taking place inside, dance!
