American Icons Invade the Granet Museum

After winning over crowds in Paris, the exhibition American Icons retires peacefully to the Granet Museum in Aix-en-Provence. It’s an opportunity to understand the work of twentieth-century American masters of contemporary art, on loan from the San Francisco MOMA during its renovation.
By Mélissa Darré

After a notable visit to the nave of the Grand Palais, it is now the Granet Museum’s turn to host the best of what contemporary American art has produced since the end of World War II. From Andy Warhol’s pop art to minimalism from Carl Andre via figurative constructions by Chuck Close, the American Icons exhibition offers visitors an emblematic panorama of conceptual art, recognized as the reflection of a new world.

The exhibition is made possible thanks to loans from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, under renovation until spring 2016, and complemented by works from the private collection of Doris and Donald Fisher, co-founders of the Gap brand. From this immersion in the history of art, one retains a lesson in style provided by 14 artists and nearly fifty works.

This preview of what’s to come in California can enjoyed from July 11 to October 18 in the intimate simplicity of the Aix en Provence museum, located on the Saint-Jean de Malte square. Don’t miss it!
