A behind-the-scenes look at Divine Cream

This year, L'Occitane is celebrating its 40th anniversary! It's the perfect opportunity to delve into the true stories behind the brand filled with the scents of Provence. Let's start with Divine Cream, a remarkable anti-ageing treatment inspired by sunny fields of everlasting 'Immortelle' flowers on the île de Beauté.

The discovery of a very special flower

During a getaway to Balagne, which is known as the garden of Corsica, the founder of L'Occitane met a distiller who revealed the powerful properties of the everlasting flower to him. "He burned himself in his workshop. He applied the essential oil from the Immortelle flower to his wound and didn't get a scar", recalls Jean-Louis Pierrisnard, the brand's scientific director.

Convinced of the flower's properties, Olivier Baussan returned to Manosque with the intention of studying this wild plant, hitherto unknown in the cosmetics industry. Renowned since Antiquity for its unique ability to never wilt even after being picked, the Immortelle flower revealed further surprises after a few months of research. In 2001, L'Occitane Research highlighted the amazing anti-ageing properties of this jewel of the Corsican scrubland.

Setting up a sustainable industry

Selected from more than 500 plant species from the Mediterranean basin, the Corsican Immortelle flower is distinguished by its unique composition. "The active ingredients are 4 to 8 times more concentrated in Corsican essential oil than in Italian, Bosnian, Croatian or Greek oil", explains Jean-Louis Pierrisnard. A natural treasure, quickly protected by L'Occitane through the implementation of an organic planting programme.

Launched in partnership with local producers in 2004, the programme has allowed this magical plant to be successfully cultivated for the very first time. Today, more than 50 golden hectares are farmed whilst protecting the environment and biodiversity. The programme harvests some three billion flowers each year

Creating youthful skincare

2009 was a milestone in the story of the Divine range. After two years of hard work, L'Occitane Research presented what would quickly become a bestseller: Divine Cream. Each jar, inspired by Chinese porcelain pots, contains nearly a hundred Immortelle flowers. Innovative and unique, the yellow hue of the jar, a first in the cosmetics industry, is reminiscent of the amber fields of Corsica.

Even richer in essential oil than Precious Cream, the formula also contains essence of myrtle, camelina and evening primrose. With an intoxicating scent and a light texture, Divine Cream has five patents* around its incredible ability to reduce and combat the visible signs of ageing. From the Corsican scrubland to your favourite L'Occitane store, rediscover this elixir of youth, which has become one of the brand's bestsellers!
