For your hike, Christophe will probably arrange to meet you early, in order to watch the sun rise near the village of Entrevennes… And he will meet you at sunset in the heights of the village Lurs to watch the sun set over the beginning of the Luberon. Christophe is like that. This energetic guide, full of stories, curious about everything, deeply loves this region where he lives with his family. Sharing is at the heart of his hikes.
Lurs is located in the Alps of Upper Provence, between Manosque and Forcalquier, at around one hour from Aix-en-Provence. A village to discover, perched atop a hill.
Christophe lives there, it’s a sort of anchor point, a base camp for this guide who sees this place as a junction point between many Provences: “In the name of the region ‘Alps of Upper Provence,’ there’s ‘Alps’ and there’s ‘Provence’ and the word ‘Upper’ connects these two so different atmospheres. So, on this beautiful territory, we have the chance to get close to the chamois amongst the edelweiss flowers bit also the cicadas in the heart of fragrant meadows of lavender and thyme. On certain summits, you can even find edelweiss growing in the middle of the ‘real,’ English, lavender bushes.”
Indeed from atop this hill, after a quarter of an hour of walking towards a crest, along a track planted with juniper, thyme, and English lavender, an exceptional panorama lies before the visitor. In front of us, a few hundred meters away as the crow flies, the mysterious Ganagobie Monastery peacefully rests on the next mountain. On the right, the Alps of Upper Provence with its snow-topped peaks and the big furrow created by the Durance River. On the other is the hilly charm of the beginning of the Luberon, with its olive trees and vines that rib the landscape. And suddenly it’s twilight, the famous “blue hour” so dear to Christophe, “where the summits embrace before being covered by the big blue of the sky and the darkness of the night that is coming.” Night falls and through Christophe, who quotes him gladly, it’s all Giono that echoes as we admire the landscape. “It was an extraordinary night, the stars had burst like sparks from a fire! When we had seen the light of the night, like that, without a sheet of glass between it and our eyes, suddenly we knew purity… there was on earth beautiful moments. We could hear the forest howl behind the wind! Youth, said the man, is joy. Youth is neither power nor flexibility; it’s the passion for the unnecessary! Branches creaked, grasses bent, shook off their ice and revealed themselves to be green. The wind was full of flavor, it was still the heart of night and the air was sweet. The blue wind came up out of the sea!”.
Go and discover this marvelous place with Christopher, you won’t be disappointed, and no matter what the season. In winter, get close to the chamois and flush out the edelweiss by joining the sunset hike on the peak of the Lure. In spring, discover other ways of practicing the hike by listening to sacred songs in the great outdoors. In summer, the founder of Fug'en Cimes invites you on a semi-nocturnal walk, to fully experience the nature and admire the Milky Way. And in autumn, let yourself be taken on a mystic and family friendly promenade to discover the elves of the Lure Mountain. So, are you tempted ?
